The need of having a social organization for the Newars was in the mind of a couple of far sighted Newars of Sikkim since long. It took some years to get this noble idea a concrete shape. Finally, Sikkim Newar Guthi was formed under the joint effort of enlightened Newar of Sikkim in Gangtok. It was registered by the government of Sikkim in the land revenue department, government of Sikkim, in the year 1994 (vide letter no. 493 l/r dated 3/12/1994) and its registration no. is “689”.

The first president of the guthi was Bhaju Mohan Pratap Pradhan. Bhaju Govind Prasad Pradhan was the first general secretary. Sikkim Newar Guthi has Shakha Guthi in different parts of the state. Shakha Guthi in Dentam in the west district, Mallidara in south district are the main hub of the Sikkim Newar Guthi. These two Shakha Guthies have taken special interest in learning Newar language, Newar classical as well as folk and modern dances, preparation of Newar dishes. Thus they have become the backbone of the Sikkim Newar Guthi. Of late, Pakyong/Rorathang Shakha Guthi is growing fast in its stature in an organized manner and with the degree of interest and dedication, with which they are coming up, it is not too far before another important centre of Newar language and culture emerges in the east district.
